Now there’s the American Dream at work: buy a nice, big, expensive house.
Both of you work full-time and ship your kid off to daycare to be raised by a stranger.
Your nice big, expensive house will sit empty all day and your kid won’t know you, but at least your net worth will increase.
Maybe.
Unless you factor in increased expenses due to the need for two nice vehicles, extra meals out since no one is around to get groceries, extra money spent on cleaning service and childcare, higher income taxes, extra clothing budget.
Oops, I guess your net worth didn’t increase either.
You just bought the lie and have a sucky life.

This is an interesting take on the American dream and certainly one version of it that a percentage of the population is living. The thing is, that percentage of the population is very likely loving it and is unlikely to be convinced otherwise. Perhaps that is for the better, too, because what right does one person have to tell another that his or her interpretation of the American dream is any less or more valid? Whatever works for that person and their family. What is important is that he or she is happy with the dream that he or she is living.

I agree to a certain point. People NEED things, and personally I disagree. With the economy there will become a time of \"de – evolution\" if you will. People will sacrifice their personal cars for mass transit, sacrifice a nice yard to grow vegetables, and things like that. TImes are changing and its time to start living simpler.

That may be your dream but in this economy I believe it is changing.
Two full time jobs may and are becoming a thing of the past. A house is becoming a thing of the past. That roof over your head my change to an apartment or a shelter without fault of your own.

so true. i like how you summed it up at the end”buying into the lie”. people are so fixated on buying the most expensive things in life they loose touch with whats important.

Sadly, people assume this is the American Dream but I know this is not something that I would want because it is a “fantasy.” Life is not that perfect that people are going to be happy just because they have material things.

A very good post that comments on the American’s dream of buying a very expensive house. Your conculsion “bought the lie” was just a nail on the head.

I disagree. Owning a home is usually a great investment, because of the tremendous tax benefits. Ironically, it’s those benefits that probably pushed the housing bubble so high. So while not seeing your kids grow up undoubtedly sucks, owning a home is still a strong, smart and all-American drea. Plus, it’s a good investment in your future, and that kid you’re missing (who will need to go to college someday!)
